The construction waste recovery plant in Rajarhat is nearing completion. According to an official of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), the plant is expected to start operations in April.
It will have the capacity to process 500 tons of waste per day. The facility will grind construction waste into aggregates that can then be mixed with concrete to pave roads.
Construction waste contains head-breaking concrete blocks from pile caps and broken tiles that are not biodegradable. Instead of throwing them away, they can be used for paving driveways. A 5-hectare site has been prepared for the establishment of a mechanical facility for the recovery of construction waste and is in the final phase of construction.
The municipal body will be clearing waste from smaller housing projects and instead of dumping it in landfills, the waste will be disposed of at this unit in Rajarhat. For larger projects, each producing 20 tons or more of waste per day, a facility must be installed on the construction site.
An authority of KMC's solid waste management department told media that the decision to install the construction waste recovery plant in Rajarhat was taken after the municipality was awarded 5 hectares of land by Hidco. An agreement was signed with a private company to install a construction waste recovery plant and installation for a period of 10 years.
They are counting on this project to solve construction waste problems. If this model becomes successful, they may need to plan another such facility in the Garden Reach area. They searched for suitable soil for this.
