The village of Coimbatore seems to be way ahead in incorporating a rainwater harvesting structure into the housing design, compared to the government apparatus.
Most houses in the village have rainwater harvesting structures to raise the water table. One of the homeowners, P Rajamanickam, told media that the rainwater collected in the courtyard would flow through a canal to the garden in the backyard.
The director of The Rain Center in Chennai, Dr. Sekhar Raghavan, told media that the garden makes up about 40% of the total area of the house. The rainwater replenishes the water table, causing the water level in the wells to rise. Almost half of the houses in the village have a well.
He said the stormwater harvesting structures in Chettipalayam were not surprising as the older generation was known for implementing measures to conserve the water for the future.
