Aurangabad Municipality in Maharashtra has decided to ban the use of fresh water for construction activities to overcome water scarcity in Marathwada's largest city.
Commissioner Aastik Kumar Pandey told media that Aurangabad City Council would also request an additional three million liters of water per day (MLD) from Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).
Pandey said a 30-point program will be implemented to manage water supplies, adding that not much has been done in the past three to four years to increase the city's water supply mechanism and capacity.
The authority has decided to ban the use of fresh water for construction activities in AMC borders to overcome water scarcity. It will be mandatory to use water from sewage treatment plants for the next two to three months, he said.
Restrictions could be imposed on swimming pools if necessary, but the municipal company does not want to disrupt the city's gradual return to normality after the Covid-19 pandemic, he said.
The government has embarked on a plan to obtain private and government-controlled wells. Guards will be assigned to keep an eye on the linemen responsible for a proper water supply, Pandey said.
Aurangabad Divisional Commissioner Sunil Kendrekar gave instructions to quickly complete the water supply works at Harsul Lake.
A representative of Shiv Sena had met Pandey during the day about the water suffering of the people in the city.
