The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) plans to use its plastic waste for road construction. Officials said they initially plan to give 10 tons of plastic waste to a private company for use in building roads and gradually increase the amount to 20 tons.
“The share of plastic waste in solid waste is around 10 to 15%. The private company gets the plastic waste from the concessionaire,” said Naresh Kumar, MCG co-commissioner for Swachh Bharat Mission.
The municipality had issued an order in 2020 mandating the use of plastic waste in road construction. The decision was made according to NGT guidelines which state that plastic waste should be used. The Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 also state that recycled waste must be used. The officials said that the life of a road also increases if shredded plastic is used in its construction.
