Gujarat's Urban Development Department is considering incentives to set up greywater treatment plants in new and existing residential and commercial projects.
Gray water is generally wastewater from bathtubs, showers, sinks, washing machines, sinks, and laundry tubs. It does not include toilet waste water.
An analysis by the Pandit Deendayal Energy University, Gandhinagar, recently found that a domestically produced greywater treatment system would cost Rs 187 per square meter per year. Recycling gray water can alleviate the problems of scarce water supply in residential and commercial buildings.
One of the two purification processes proposed is the hybrid system consisting of a natural filtration unit with a bioreactor system.
“We want to boost gray water treatment plants in the upcoming 10-year development plan for Ahmedabad. Most 25 to 40-year residential programs will be redeveloped. It is therefore useful if the incentive schemes are announced now. This will be a major shift from current plans for sewage treatment plants (WWTPs) and will put much less strain on municipal systems,” said a senior city development department official.
