In response to a private real estate contractor destroying a pipeline carrying water to many parts of Mumbai, the BMC has written to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) requesting payment of a fine of Rs. 750 million.
Two large water pipes off Mumbai, according to BMC sources, pass through the city of Thane and under the Eastern Expressway. A private contractor had damaged one of the pipelines in the first week of March while working on pile driving and excavation for an infrastructure project.
According to officials, the pipeline is 8 m underground and was quickly repaired after the damage was discovered.
However, according to BMC authorities, they informed the contractor and Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) about the pipeline alignment and asked them to make the necessary repairs with the utmost caution.
However, on March 30, the same pipeline suffered another damage, interrupting Mumbai's regular water supply.
The BMC had written to the TMC on March 30 after the pipeline was damaged twice, requesting compensation from the contractor.
