The Rajarhat construction and demolition waste recovery plant will finally be put into operation. Construction waste will be crushed at the plant to make "aggregates" that can be used with concrete to pave roads. Concrete blocks, pile caps and broken tiles are examples of non-biodegradable construction waste. They can be used for driveway pavement. A 5-acre parcel was given to a private company for the construction of a mechanical unit for the recovery of construction waste, said a source in KMC's solid waste management department.
According to the official, the civil society organization will remove waste from smaller residential complexes and transport it to the crusher plant in Rajarhat instead of dumping it in landfills. A factory will must be located on the construction site for larger projects, each of which has 20 tons or more of trash per day, the local official said.
After receiving a 5-hectare plot from HIDCO, the SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT department of the KMC decided to build the facility in Rajarhat. Sources at the KMC claim that a contract has been signed with a private company to set up and operate a building waste recovery plant for ten years.
"We are counting on this project to solve the problems with construction waste in Kolkata. Fast construction took place in the city. If this concept works, we can consider using a similar installation to process a larger amount of construction waste. For this purpose, we have already started searching for suitable land, the KMC official said.
