The Delhi government is constructing Asia's largest sewage treatment plant in Okhla, which can treat 564 MLD of sewage every day. The project is in its final stages and Delhi Water Minister Atishi recently inspected this plant.
Noting the delay in the project, the minister summoned the officials and directed them to complete it by the end of this year.
During the inspection, Atishi said, “This 564 MLD plant will be a big step towards cleaning the Yamuna. Once operational, this plant will be treated and then discharged, instead of millions of liters of wastewater being discharged directly into the Yamuna every day. After the operation of this plant, the Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) of the contaminated water can be reduced to 10. The water treated by the plant will not only help in cleaning the Yamuna but will also be useful for gardening and other purposes.
During the visit, the Delhi Water Minister found that the project was behind schedule. He gave instructions to the officials, stating that the remaining works should be completed before the end of the year as per the new schedule. Progress reports are due to her every Monday. Highlighting the importance of these plants in cleaning the Yamuna, he emphasized that no delay in their construction will be tolerated.
