• High concrete durability is one of the factors that can significantly decrease maintenance costs of structures exposed to severe environmental conditions. The mechanical and durability properties of high performance concrete with added metakaolin are studied in this book. Ten percent of the cement in the concrete mixtures was replaced by the metakaolin. In the experimental part of the book, frost resistance and resistance to scaling due to de-icing salts was measured. It was found that the type of added metakaolin does not have a significant influence on the results. The frost resistance of both types of concrete with added metakaolin satisfied code requirements and was comparable to the performance of air-entrained concrete. The resistance of concrete with metakaolin against salt-scaling was worse compared to air-entrained concrete. The experimental work proved that the type of the surface treatment for the scaling tests had major influence on the results. This analysis is especially useful to civil engineers responsible for durability of structures and highways. It can also interest anyone who may be considering replacing cement by metakaolin in concrete mixture design.

• Preparation of some hyperbranched polymers by using Couple Monomer Methodology such as hyperbranched poly(amine-ester)s and hyperbranched poly(amide-ester) due to their extraordinary desirable properties. 2- Characterization of the prepared hyperbranched polymers by using different investigation techniques, such as FT-IR, 1HNMR, GPC and thermal analyses. 3- Applying the prepared polymers in Ordinary Portland Cement cement pastes and the physicomechanical characteristics of cement pastes were studied.

• In this research, effect of mineral admixtures not only focused on fresh and hardened properties but also studied durability of concrete. Acidic attack represents a topic of increasing significance, owing to the spread of damages of concrete structures in both urban and industrial areas. Type of cement being used in the structure is an important factor the affecting performance of cement constituents in an aggressive environment. The goal of this study is to compare the acidic resistance of ordinary Portland cement with different admixtures as part of constituents. The admixtures used are silica fume, fly ash, blast furnace slag and metakaolin. Standard procedures are employed to assess the performance of admixture cements with different organic and mineral acids.

• The suitability of masonry mortar for various construction applications is dependent on some vital engineering properties and production cost. In majority of masonry formulations, ordinary portland cement(OPC) is the principal binding agent. However the current trend of cement cost in Ghana has rendered masonry mortar formulation quite expensive. Meanwhile in other parts of the world, different types of admixtures which are either chemical or mineral products are well known to improve mechanical and economical values of formulated mortars. In this study two available mineral admixtures namely clay pozzolana and limestone were used as partial replacement of OPC to formulate binary and ternary pastes and mortars. Some mechanical properties and aspect of durability studies were determined.

• This thesis studies the effects of superplasticizers, polyacrylate latexes and asphalt emulsions, which differ in molecular/particle size from nanometers to microns, on the rheological properties of fresh cement pastes (FCPs), as well as the action mechanisms involved. It systematically investigates the rheological properties and microstructure of cement-based materials, and elucidates the adsorption behaviors of polycarboxylate polymers with different functional groups and their effects on cement hydration. Moreover, it reveals how the working mechanism of naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde (NSF) differs from that of polycarboxylate ether-based (PCE) superplasticizers. Lastly, it develops a conceptual microstructure model and two rheological equations. These findings lend theoretical support to the development of new chemical admixtures and new, higher-performance, cement-based composites.
